Meeke backs new ERC Junior initiative

ERC chiefs have announced a seven-event calendar for their new Junior championship initiative and Kris Meeke has said young drivers would be mad not to take part.

The new-for-2014 category includes Meeke’s home rally, the Circuit of Ireland, on a roster of events that begins with Rally Liepaja in Latvia and also features ERC regulars Rallye Acores, Ypres Rally, Rally Zlin, Rallye du Valais and Tour de Corse.

“It’s a massive opportunity and an absolute must for young drivers from this neck of the woods to do the ERC Junior Championship when it comes to the Circuit of Ireland next season and showcase their ability against strong European opposition,” said Meeke. “I’m such a believer in junior categories and because all drivers have got to learn the basics to start off with before they come through into other categories.”

Meeke learned his trade in one-make rallying before he stepped up to the Junior world championship full time in 2004 with backing from Colin McRae. He scored class wins in Monte Carlo and Germany during a three-year stint but ultimately failed to win the crown.

ERC Junior rules restrict drivers to R2 machinery, control tyres and fuel. There are numerous incentives on offer including dedicated TV and training. Drivers can count their best four scores.
