Mikko’s accident in Finland - Photo analysis

6.5km into the Urria stage lay Mikko Hirvonen’s favourite crest in Rally Finland. At 10:12am on Friday 30th July 2010, his opinion changed forever when he had the biggest accident of his career on this crest at 140kph. McKlein photographer Tony Welam was at this jump when it was run as SS2 and saw Mikko take a very committed approach to his favourite place. Tony was annoyed that TV advertising banners had ruined his shot so he decided to stay in the same location when it was repeated as SS4 later in the same morning, this time without any advertising banners in place. This proved to be a good decision for Tony and he ‘scooped’ the shots of the rally as Mikko got his favourite crest all wrong. Thankfully the crew suffered no major injuries and Mikko said that, on landing, “the steering didn’t react.” Onboard camera footage indicates that the landing impact may have wrenched the steering wheel from his hands but Tony Welam’s photographic evidence suggests that, in comparison to the the two preceding Sebastien’s (Loeb & Ogier), he was just too fast. Sorry Mikko, but the camera never lies….........
