The Swede’s wife Marie-Louise was on her way to hospital to give birth to their second child, driven by Andersson, but their newborn son beat them to it. The couple had to stop on the hard shoulder of a motorway near Stockholm, where they were met by an ambulance, whose crew safely delivered the baby.

"It was a little strange," said the Swede. "I was pretty calm, but when the baby comes out you do want a little assistance."

According to Andersson, who won the Junior World Rally Championship twice, in 2004 and 2007, the new arrival – named Alvin – seems set to become a rally driver too.

"He seems to have it in his genes," the driver told Swedish newspaper Expressen.
