American driver Ken Block has announced details of his WRC programme, having got the Rally America Championship underway this weekend in a specially-prepared Rally America Ford Fiesta powered by a 2-litre turbocharged engine that is capable of 493 horsepower.

However, the Rally America rules limit output to 330 bhp – similar to the power of the Ford Focus WRC that he will compete with for the first time on the Rally Mexico from March 5-7.

The ‘Gymkhana’ star will take part in seven rounds of the World Rally Championship this year: Mexico, Turkey, Portugal, Germany, France, Spain and Britain. His cars on both the Rally America Championship and World Rally Championship will be backed by energy drink firm Monster, while Ford’s factory M-Sport team will run his car on the WRC.

Up-and-coming Australian Chris Atkinson, who last competed on the 2009 season-opener in Ireland is hoping to line up a deal to drive a second Focus alongside Block, but so far negotiations have stalled over funding.

It is midway through day-6 of the 9 day event and the winner Bjorn Waldegard sits stoically in his battered Porsche 911. This car has just had a large section of the roll cage replaced because of extensive damage sustained after Bjorn lost control in a slippery mud-hole and hit a stranded truck. The repair was expertly effected by the Tuthill Porsche team, who cannibalised a retired 911 to repair Waldegard's version in real African 'back-street-garage' style. Incredibly only 41 minutes in road penalties were lost.
