Niall McShea believes new Proton team-mate Keith Cronin is the real deal after accompanying the British champion during a test in Czech Republic last Monday.

McShea and Cronin are in the country to contest round nine of the Intercontinental Rally Challenge in their works Satria Neo S2000s. McShea has previous experience behind the wheel of the MEM-run machine and agreed to join Cronin for part of the test.

“He’d obviously just come straight from another rally so was match fit, but from sitting with him he’s clearly an extremely good driver,” said McShea, who is starting his first rally for 12 months.

Cronin said McShea’s experience is proving invaluable. He said: “I’m talking to him all the time about the car. He’s got brilliant knowledge and he can offer explain what I’m thinking quicker than I can.”

It is midway through day-6 of the 9 day event and the winner Bjorn Waldegard sits stoically in his battered Porsche 911. This car has just had a large section of the roll cage replaced because of extensive damage sustained after Bjorn lost control in a slippery mud-hole and hit a stranded truck. The repair was expertly effected by the Tuthill Porsche team, who cannibalised a retired 911 to repair Waldegard's version in real African 'back-street-garage' style. Incredibly only 41 minutes in road penalties were lost.
