Richard Burns will be remembered by a gathering of Subaru Impreza road cars on September 25.

Although details of the event are still being finalised, it is expected Impreza owners will descend on Prodrive’s Banbury, UK, headquarters to pay tribute to the 2001 world rally champion, who lost his battle with brain cancer five years ago this November.

The event will raise funds for the Richard Burns Foundation, which was established to help those suffering from brain cancer and other neurological disorders.

With a working title of ‘Remembering Richard’, the event will be reminiscent of the McRae Gathering, which attracted 1086 Subarus when it took place in 2008. The figure set a new world record although Remembering Richard event organisers have said they would be satisfied to attract 400 cars.

Burns was driving a Prodrive-run Impreza when he won the world title alongside Robert Reid, who helped to establish the Richard Burns Foundation and maintains a close link with the charity.

It is midway through day-6 of the 9 day event and the winner Bjorn Waldegard sits stoically in his battered Porsche 911. This car has just had a large section of the roll cage replaced because of extensive damage sustained after Bjorn lost control in a slippery mud-hole and hit a stranded truck. The repair was expertly effected by the Tuthill Porsche team, who cannibalised a retired 911 to repair Waldegard's version in real African 'back-street-garage' style. Incredibly only 41 minutes in road penalties were lost.
