The Ford Fiesta S2000 has fared considerably better than the Focus WRC over the weekend, winning both the Kuwait International Rally and the Super 2000 World Rally Championship classification in Mexico. Bernardo Sousa also clinched the Torrie Rally, the opening round of the Portuguese championship.

Khaled Al Qassimi won with no problems in Kuwait, while Xevi Pons took the class win in Mexico with eighth overall. Second place for Martin Prokop in Mexico, also at the wheel of a Fiesta, ensures that the Czech driver now leads the championship. But the fastest Fiesta driver in Mexico was Michal Kosciuszko, who won nine stages and sealed third place in class, despite having to resort to SupeRally following some mechanical problems.

Ford team principal Malcolm Wilson commented: “I’m absolutely delighted by the progress the Fiesta has made, it’s got off to a really good start. All the Fiesta drivers have done very well, particularly as for many it was their first time in the car.”

It is midway through day-6 of the 9 day event and the winner Bjorn Waldegard sits stoically in his battered Porsche 911. This car has just had a large section of the roll cage replaced because of extensive damage sustained after Bjorn lost control in a slippery mud-hole and hit a stranded truck. The repair was expertly effected by the Tuthill Porsche team, who cannibalised a retired 911 to repair Waldegard's version in real African 'back-street-garage' style. Incredibly only 41 minutes in road penalties were lost.
